Eye of the Earth: Secrets and Depths of Glavashevo Lake in Croatia

The amazing Glavashevo Lake is located just 7 kilometers south of the city of Vrlika in Croatia.

This small karst lake is known for its extremely clear azure water, through which you can see the cave below. The lake acquired its unique appearance thanks to these features, and is often called the “Eye of the Earth”. Despite the impressive view from above, the lake is actually quite small.

The name “Eye of the Earth” comes from associations with bottomless eyes, because the lake has significant depth. Scuba divers report reaching a depth of 155 meters, but the true depth remains unknown, because the lake is a karst cave filled with water and can extend deep and far.

In fact, water from Lake Glavaševo supplies the Cetina River, which on its way to the Adriatic Sea creates a reservoir and a cascade of waterfalls. Despite the hot summer, the water in the lake remains cold, and even at an air temperature of +35 degrees, the water temperature does not rise above +7 degrees. Swimming here seems unlikely.
